About Koh Chang Island

Koh Chang is an island situated 310 kilometers from Bangkok on the eastern seaboard of the Gulf of Thailand and near the border with Cambodia. It is a district of Trat Province. Its land area is measured approximately 217 square kilometers which is 30 kilometers long and 14 kilometers wide. Koh Chang is considered the second largest island in Thailand next to Phuket and a famous tourist destination. It has attracted many visitors both local and foreign nationalities from around the world all year round.

Though the name Koh Chang means an island of elephants, it was discovered that elephants are not indigenous to the place. The moniker is attributed to its land mass which resembles the shape of elephant when one is approaching Koh Chang from the southern side of it. The 70% of the island is covered with tropical rainforests which are mainly at its interior or center area. Its highest point is Khao Salak Phet which is measured at 743 meters above sea level.  It is inhabited with a population counting between 5,000 to 6,000 residents in nine villages living in different locations who are mainly dependent to fishing and some are associated with tourism industry. The entire Koh Chang and its satellite islands being an archipelago are part of Mu Koh Chang National Park and are under the national marine protection program.

 

The western portion of Koh Chang Island is regarded as the most concentrated tourism spot. This is mainly because of the presence of hotels & resorts. Most of them are high-end establishments which offer excellent accommodation packages, leisure facilities, swimming pools, spa, Jacuzzi, bars, restaurants, etc. Wi-Fi Internet connectivity is an added free service to enjoy. The long chained stretches of white sandy beaches along the coastal areas are very enticing to the senses. The beach fronting the hotels or resorts is well-kept and the fine white sands are combed regularly. The nights in this side of the island are alive and merry with live entertainments such as cultural shows, live bands and others. Due to the influx of tourists from other countries, bars & nightclub also thrive in numbers in different locations.

 

The island of Koh Chng has many more to offer to cater tourists’ varying preferences. For the adventurous, it has satellite islands as venues for kayaks and island hopping. Its rainforests are home to endemic species like birds, deer, wild boars, squirrels, snakes, lizards and more which are also good avenues for mountain trekking or outdoor camping. Visiting the main office of the Mu Koh Chang National Park administration, you could have the experience of a virtual journey of the island through its interactive maps. If you decide to spend a night in the wilderness or in the interior part of the forest, the park administration has patrol rangers and guides to make it happen. Discovering the underworld beauty through scuba diving or snorkeling where you could have a close encounter with different fish species, corals, crabs, crustaceans, and other marine life is a fun way to indulge as a group educational trip. If you want to find a solace stay or vacation, you can always find a remote island of your desire as long as you approach the customer’s desk of the hotel or resort you are staying in.  There is no problem strolling around the island either by sea or land because along the way the local residents are hospitable and willing to lend their hands to help you if you lost your way or want to visit other important landmarks of Koh Chang.  

 

Tourists who have visited Koh Chang Island are observed to be inclined to do their next visit most likely. Other foreign nationals settle for good in the island with their families. Short description:

Klong Son beach (or Had Klong Son) is located on the north of Koh Chang. Nice bay at the very top of the island. Pure white sand stretch of beach, shaded with coconut trees. Klong Son gets very low numbers of visitors with the bulk of the backpackers and tourists alike speeding south enroute to Koh Chang's finer and more popular stretches of sand.

Short description:

Koh Chang's most famous stretch of sand, at over 2km long there's certainly room for everyone! Lined with bungalows, food stalls and shops this is one of the best beaches in all of Thailand.

Short description:

Situated on the somewhat less glamorous, northern side of the Koh Chang Island, Klong Prao isn’t all that much of tourist destination, especially for those who are in need of a true holiday experience of the exotic kind.

Short description:

Also known as Kai Bae Beach, this is the spot to catch a great sunset! A few small shops and food stalls are along the beach, a good spot to chill out away from the crowds at White Sands Beach.

Bangbao Bay is good for:

Short description:

A well-sheltered bay with a small and quiet beach. It is a fishing community where residents still live in houses built on stilts and are connected by wooden bridges. There are a growing number of tourist shops, scuba dive outlets and seafood restaurants offering a good selection of seafood.

Salak Khok Bay is good for:

Short description:

There aren’t so much attraction in Salak Kok, but tourists can Kayak among the mangroves. Salak Kok Bay still has a fishing community that doesn’t change so much in many years, a great place to see the real traditional Thai community.
