A well-sheltered bay with a small and quiet beach.
It is a fishing community where residents still live in houses built on stilts and are connected by wooden bridges. There are a growing number of tourist shops, scuba dive outlets and seafood restaurants offering a good selection of seafood.
Situated in the south eastern end of the Koh Chang Island, Bang Bao Bay offers one of the most naturally preserved areas on the island, since it is very well protected, stretching for a distance of close to 1 square kilometre.
The village which inhabits this area has moved from fishing, as their main industry, to mainly catering for tourism, making for some great diving and recreational fishing spots as well as the bay where a lot of tourist boats depart.
This beach has some nice spots for a quiet time out, which is in stark contrast to some of the other beach areas on the island, so if it is a more secluded, serene beach experience you are after then Bang Bao Bay Beach is the best choice.
A lot of natural plant life grows wildly, the way it was intended by nature, since the area is so well protected, so it can be a bit of a mission to locate the beachfront area in some instances, but this will not be a problem if you are staying in any one of the resorts nearby, as they have full guidelines on how to get around and where to find everything you need to find.
Most of the fishing that goes on is not entirely for commercial purposes, so your time on the beach will almost never feature any fishing boats to spoil your view of the sea.
The fishing that does take place, by the boats that depart the bay, is mainly for the restaurants nearby, which naturally serve a lot of seafood and Thai cuisines, but the quality seems to be better too as there is a balance maintained, since large scale selling of the fish is not the main practice.
Bang Bao Bay Beach is the ideal spot for those who seek a quieter experience of the island of Koh Chang, but still want the full tourist experience, mixed with the natural experience of the local community.
