What to see

Namtok Than Mayom in Koh Chang

On a secluded part of Koh Chang, you’ll find an attractive waterfall called Nam Tok Than Mayom. It is found on the eastern coast of the island, just two kilometers away from the small community of Dan Mai. It is the second most famous fall in Koh Chang following Nam Tok Kong Plu.

best mode to reach Than Mayom is usually motorbike, as taxis are very rare on this side of the island. If ever you will rent a motorbike, you can park it on the private parking area for a small fee. Since it is owned by the National Park, there will be an admission fee for 200 baht.

The walk will be about five minutes from the entrance towards the fall itself. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see different kinds of creatures like birds, monkeys and butterflies on your way. You’ll also see different kinds of lush and green plants, the rich soil and all sizes of rocks.

It is relatively smaller than Kong Plu—it is a medium-sized waterfall that has four levels, third of which is the most beautiful and attractive. The water falls down first in a pool then to another one—it then reaches the last level where it ends on a beautiful jade-colored stream.

Kong Plu’s history is very unique. The older Thai royalties used the area. You can easily see the well-preserved Royal Initials of King Rama V, King Rama VII and Queen Rambhai Barni on a slab of stone just beside the fall.

Just like Kong Plu, Than Mayom’s seclusion from the center of the island makes it more beautiful to see. It is a relaxing place to stay and explore because of the thick, green forest that covers it. It is ideal for people who are not afraid of the surrounding tall mountains.

A morning trip to the fall is more advisable because it is when you’ll hear the beautiful sound of nature—the soft rustle of leaves, the gentle flow of water, and the pleasant chirps of birds. It is the time when the sunshine is not that strong.

Better bring a sun block, towel and extra clothes with you as you really cannot resist the magnificent beauty of Than Mayom. Don’t forget your cameras too, because you really don’t want to forget the splendor of Than Mayom.

Most of all, come together with your loved ones for a worth-sharing experience that will surely last a lifetime.
